Message from Program Leadership

On behalf of our faculty, fellows and staff, I am pleased to welcome you to the Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship Program at UMMC.  As the only academic hospital in the state of Mississippi, UMMC has served as a pillar to the city of Jackson since its arrival in 1955.  This designation, as well as our dedication to the care of veterans at the G.V. Sonny Montgomery Medical Center, provides our fellows with a wide array of educational opportunities.  We are committed to preparing our fellows to perform evidence-based pulmonary critical care medicine of high complexity in a professional manner of the highest ethical standards.

The keystone to our pulmonary disease experience is the broad array of pathophysiology and bronchoscopic interventions.  Our fellows receive constant exposure to our interventional pulmonary, pulmonary hypertension, and interstitial lung disease clinics during their three years of training.  These outpatient experiences are augmented by exposure to a host of procedures including right heart catheterization, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), navigational bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, cryobiopsy, tumor debulking, and tunnelled pleural catheter placement.  Our graduating fellows enter the workforce competent at all standard bronchoscopic interventions, including EBUS, and have a strong interventional foundation in the pursuit of a career path.

Our critical care experience is highlighted by our 4-story 80 bed critical care tower, which along with our centralized 776 bed university hospital, provides our fellows a high turnover, quick pace environment of remarkable medical complexity. In addition, their exposure to all of the offered critical care services, including surgical, cardiovascular, and neuroscience, assists in the development of a well-rounded evidence-based intensivist.  Lastly, while on the medical ICU service, our fellows also serve as the head of an 8-10 person internal medicine resident team, supplying them the opportunity to sharpen leadership skills that will aid in all future endeavors.  

I am lucky to have been a part of the UMMC family for over a decade.  It is truly a rewarding place to work, and I am honored to practice pulmonary and critical care medicine while providing care to our underserved population in the state. I hope you consider taking a look both at our program and also the hidden gem that is Jackson, MS. Jackson has many unique restaurants with diverse cuisine and also hosts numerous festivals and events, including several annual food and wine festivals, an ever-popular St. Patrick’s Day parade, and a host of sporting events. It is an affordable place to live with many good living options that are only a short commute to the medical center. In short, we in the pulmonary/critical care division at UMMC think it is a wonderful place to work and train and think you will undoubtedly feel the same way!
